Truth be told I was looking for another long weekend getaway and somehow I stumbled on the little gem of Timor L’Este. This little island nation (or half an island actually.. the western part of Timor is part of Indonesia) is only a 1 hour flight north of Darwin. So I whisked myself away for a weekend of scuba diving in the Banda Strait- some of the most nutrient rich and ecodiverse seas in the world.
This post will be more of a photo essay because I spent most of my weekend under the waves & finning around reefs in the clear bath like waters. I only dipped my toe briefly into Dili the capital and its hilly surrounds. What I discovered was a warm, gentle people rebuilding a national identity after a lengthy history as a Portuguese colony and then subsequent invasion and occupation by Indonesia. Another fascinating surprise discovered while looking around my ‘backyard’!
