I’ve never studied history as a subject but instead have been steadily piecing together the stories of the world as I have travelled it. As I reflect on the other ancient civilisations and ruins I’ve seen still nothing really prepared me for meeting almost face to face the Egyptians from 5000 years ago.

This was not a journey to soak up culture and food but a whirlwind immersion in the monuments and relics of ancient Egypt

From the Ancient Kingdom with its great pyramids that had its seat in Memphis (near Cairo) to the Middle and New Kingdoms with their proliferation of mega architectural and art projects based at Thebes (modern day Luxor) in the south I have visited some of the highlights.

This trip deserves a photo essay to convey better than words the feeling of awe – humbled by the complexity and scale of buildings built by hand with precision and ingenuity. Standing before scenes carved and coloured as if yesterday from lives that played out thousands of years ago. These were respllendent kingdoms that gathered ebony and ivory, spices, frankincense and gold from far lands to enrich their lives.

And so I am still digesting what I have witnessed firsthand from 3000 years of civilisation- I have come home with a book or two ready to disappear further down the rabbit hole of Egyptology!
