I’ve had the shortest of mid-winter escapes to hike one of Australia’s Great Walks: the Cape to Cape track in south- Western Australia.
The 135km track follows sections of the ancient trails of the Wadandi Noongar indigenous people of the Cape region of Western Australia which enabled them to follow seasonal food sources from the land and the sea.
From Cape Naturaliste lighthouse in the north to Cape Leeuwin lighthouse in the south the path hugs rugged coastline, wends through towering karri and jarrah forest, along white powder sand beaches with thundering barrel waves, meanders through fragrant coastal heathlands and by magnificent grass trees, hops over orange granite boulders and visits secret turquoise bays.
I was blessed with 7 days of mostly fine and sunny weather for the journey (unseasonal weather for this time of year!) and a good dose of support from Cape to Cape Explorer Tours getting me to and from the trail each day. I hope you enjoy a photographic essay of the hike which is in a truly special corner of the world.
