A Detour in Uruguay, January 2018

This past week has seen me take a short detour through Uruguay. It’s made me realise that almost everyone south of the Equator loves a good barbecue – whether it’s a braai, a barbie, a churrasco or a parilla. The Uruguayans are also partial to a well cooked steak or sausage ( although with chimichurri sauce). And while they’re just as famed as Argentina for gauchos and tango I have discovered some of their other less well known secrets: architecture and vintage cars!

A tour of the capital Montevideo should come with chiropractic benefits for the hours spent craning up at the array of historic building facades. The city is an architectural showpiece from the late 19th and early 20th centuries- eclecticism, art nouveau and Art Deco.
Although a prosperous and first world country today Uruguay went through a boom in the early 1900s on the back of new deep freeze storage techniques that allowed it to export its beef en masse to hungry Europeans. Mass migration of Italians and Spanish in the other direction brought the latest in construction, cars and luxury goods.
Uruguay feels like it has one foot in the modern world and one in the romantic yesteryear. I hope you enjoy this short photographic essay of the architecture of Montevideo and the vintage cars of Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay.
